Kitri recommends: The Iris at Now Gallery

KITRI Recommends: Rebecca Louise Law Now Gallery | Journal | KITRI Studio
Best known for her wistful floral sculptures, we have long been fans of British artist Rebecca Louise Law at KITRI - look up installations ‘The Yellow Flower’ in Japan and ‘The Canopy’ in Australia. So naturally we’re thrilled to see that Rebecca has taken over Greenwich’s NOW gallery with a captivating display, just in time to welcome the warmer months.
Comprised of exactly ten thousand fresh Irises -  each suspended with copper wire to allow every single flower to ‘float’ within the space.  The installation’s focus is to simply let nature to take its course, as the show evolves each flower slowly dries, changing form, texture and colour.

As admirers of floral displays here at KITRI (our logo was inspired by the shape of orchids,) we love Rebecca’s reasons for choosing the Iris. Not only a springtime flower but a marshland plant, the Iris was an obvious decision for Rebecca as she discovered that the land the gallery sits on was once tidal marshes, previously known as ‘Bugsby’s’ and ‘Greenwich’ Marsh. So not only is this artwork  a celebration of floral blooms but is an exploration of the area, both its past and present.

Fully visible from the outside, thanks to NOW’s clear glass walls, we highly recommend paying a visit to this site-specific work. Simply step inside the gallery and soak in the palette of vibrant blue, purple, yellow and white Iris flowers. Instantly transporting you into a poetic and natural environment, a stark contrast to London inner-city life.
The Iris - Rebecca Louise Law is on at NOW gallery, Greenwich Peninsula until May 7th 2017.
